Paintings of Steve’s paintings
Like ‘Solo Man’ before him, ‘Handsome Steve’ – icon of refreshment – has been decommissioned. But before this one time publican, musician and café proprietor resurfaces – reinvented – there must be reflection.
Tucked in a corner of the Abbotsford Convent, amidst writers, artists and community organisations, the ‘House of Refreshment’ created a unique atmosphere for tenants and the fastidiously curious. Denizens were met with a famously sparse menu, but the abundant, ironically rich environment ignited inspiration and fostered community perfectly.
At the bar for a regular Friday night beer, artist Matlok Griffiths, and gallerist Cameron Miller ‘feeling the vibe’, were driven to do a show to honour its influence. Along with other artists ‘similarly affected’, their interpretation of the unusual concoction of faux opulence and adornment, Cats memorabilia and old-timer Italian style, has led to new artworks – humorous and reminiscent in nature.
Now, the sign swings ‘closed’ but the show goes on – bringing insight to the imbibed artistic mind – and creating an occasion for celebration. Relive the refreshing antidote of the House of Refreshment with Paintings of Steve’s Paintings at St Heliers this July.
